Woman Marries Her Cousin, Family Punishes Her By Cremating Her Effigy in Jharkhand’s Chatra | Earth Indian

Chatra (Jharkhand): Shocked over a woman’s decision to marry her cousin, her family members performed her last rites by cremating her effigy in Jharkhand’s Chatra district. According to the police, 25-year-old, Sabita alias Kiran Kumari the daughter of Sukhdeo Ram, married Rajdeep Kumar, the son of her uncle Lakhan Ram, four months ago.

Her family members had vehemently opposed the marriage and made all efforts to convince her, but in vain. Unhappy by her decision, the matter was also reported to the police but the girl was adamant and stuck to her choice, saying she wants to spend life with her cousin Rajdeep. When the family members failed to change her mind even after a lot of persuasion, they decided to punish her by performing her last rites.

On Monday, the family members took out a funeral procession with a dummy of the girl, and cremated it after following all the rituals. Even her father and mother shouldered the brier. The incident took place in Kharika village under the Tandawa police station in Chatra district.

The family said that their daughter’s wrong step has insulted them in society and have ended all ties with her.  “She had got engaged in a good family. But her latest act has left us ashamed,” the girl’s father told mediapersons.

According to villagers, the girl had an affair with her cousin Rajdeep for several years. Both lived and studied in Ranchi and got married a few months ago.
