‘Mishti & Rosogulla’ Are Apparently ‘Essential’ for Bengalis, So Sweet Shops In WB Will Run for 4 Hours Daily | Earth Indian
Kolkata: Every one knows that Bengalis absolutely love sweets, so much so that that ‘sondesh’, ‘misti doi’ etc like remain an integral part of the average Bengali’s meal. However, the ongoing lockdown in the country had deprived them of the pleasure for almost a week!
But now, they can now breathe a sigh of relief because on Monday, the West Bengal government said it will allow sweet shops to operate with minimum staff during the lockdown. However, they will remain open from 12 noon to 4 pm only and customers will not be allowed to sit and eat in the shops to ensure social distancing.
The decision was taken after the sweet makers wrote to CM Mamata Banerjee urging her to let them run their shops, while reasoning that thousands of litres of milk was going to waste due to the lockdown.

Well, this is a first instance of a state government allowing sweet shops, which do not fall in the list of essential food items, to operate in the lockdown period.
Soon after the order was passed, the demand for sweets surged as people rushed to buy rosogolla, doi, sandesh, peda, kalakand, which quickly flew off the shelves. As shops opened around the afternoon, there was a flurry of consumers and online delivery boys to pick up orders, proving West Bengal’s love affair with sweets.
Bengalis welcomed the decision and were clearly elated after this decision, while others had some other concerns:
West Bengal is the Sweetest part of India.

Was this really needed? Is Bengal so hungry for sweets that it cannot compromise with it even when the country is dealing with such a great problem? Where people are not even getting food is bengal busy fulfilling its cravings? pic.twitter.com/BmaNS5NkrV

West Bengal has approximately 17,500 people associated in sweet making business forums and has more than one lakh such shops across the state.
