Assam Lecturer Arrested For ‘Derogatory’ FB Post Against PM, Sent To 4-day Judicial Custody | Earth Indian

New Delhi: Souradeep Sengupta, a guest lecturer at prestigious Gurucharan College in Assam’s Silchar was arrested and remanded to four days’ judicial custody after students from the institute lodged complaint against him for allegedly posting derogatory comments against PM Modi and the BJP on Facebook. He was taken into custody from his residence in the Itkhola area.

Notably, Sengupta,  in wake of Delhi violence had allegedly made inflammatory comments against the Hindu community in his Facebook post, which he later deleted. He also issued an apology for hurting any religious sentiments

“I apologise for any religious sentiments I may have hurt by my posts. I made some irresponsible comments about a communally sensitive issue. It was a lapse of judgement. My intention was not to insult any religion at large,” he posted on late Thursday night.

Demanding Sengupta’s immediate termination, students of the college held a demonstration on the campus. His family, on the other hand, alleged that he was “intentionally targeted” by a group of students who forcibly entered the house hurling abuses.

He has been charged under Sections 323 and 295 A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings of any class), Section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups and criminal intimidation), among others.
